Rex 之前的作品如《七孔流血》、《取西經》等電影系列與「Simple People」插畫系列,同樣以二創手法形式創作。與Rex交談時,得知他是因為希望可以創作一套屬於自己的原創漫畫,所以才下定決心下筆畫《城寨誌異》。另外展覽商品如動畫 flipbox、figure 等等產品,都是他希望將所有喜歡的東西「一次過做晒出來」。
如〈奔向未來日子〉是描寫一個上班族有多麼討厭上班,那〈鐵血丹心〉就是描寫另一個上班族有多麼喜歡上班。一個就要用如「王小虎」式的「如來神掌」打爆所有高樓大廈,另一個是即使要化成機械人也要把妨礙他上班的路障一一清除,堅持回到辦公室坐在不知還有沒有電力供應的電腦螢幕前面。看漫畫的時候我想起了 2018 年香港掛上十號風球(山竹)的日子,那時市面一片狼藉,到處水浸、大樹倒下,無論公共交通工具或是自駕車輛上班上學都有問題,但無論政府或各大公司也沒有相應的合適對策,以致全港市民都要如常上班⋯⋯加上香港人很喜歡上班(!?),於是當天出現了「The Last of Us」式的上班場面。漫畫中有些場景也令人聯想起當時看著其他人拼命上班的荒鳩謬感覺。
In a blink of an eye, we come to the imaginary future which is described as the “future 2020” in two of the most important works of cyberpunk, 《AKIRA》 and 《Blade Runner》. Hong Kong, where is a high-density city, is often used as a futuristic urban scene by cyberpunk. What kind of lives are people living in those skyscrapers? How to manage yourself in a space where people are so close? What level of difficulties do we need to face? How to understand the relationship of self and society? What are the thoughts in everyone’s mind?
Rex Koo has been starting to create his comic collection《Strange Tales of Walled City》since 2018. In an imaginary future of a high-density city, a group of workers are experiencing a life-and-death transformation. Some people intend to resist the system with their own strength. Some ignore any changes in the world and continue to live as usual. There is a cat trying to bring its owner back to life. Three strangers are stuck amid a spacetime with mixtures of new vs old, broken vs recreation and right vs wrong. They are having their own beliefs in their hearts, are silently creating their own futures in this city.
